Yessss. I often catch myself skimming quickly through readings on substack, then backing up and trying again to soak it in slowly 🕯️It doesn’t just slow the process down, it slows us down, helps us breathe deeper, notice where we are 💕
You might enjoy a book called The Molecule of More, which is all about the role of dopamine in our brains and lives. What’s really interesting to me are the other brain chemicals (like serotonin and oxytocin) that he describes as “here and now” chemicals, as opposed to dopamine which promotes seeking. It’s a book that truly changed my perspective!
i love this, it reminds me of something i read which said that we all need to slow our nervous systems down because we’re always in a rush to do even the simplest of things like brushing our teeth. we should try to revel in the small moments a little bit more ✨
Ooh, and if you want to read an old book and get a real feel for the pace people used to live, try re/reading Anne of Green Gables. You can get it for free online with all the following books in one book. I did this after a challenge from my Fantasy writer friend, Kate Forsyth, suggested it. I am so glad I did.
It was especially lovely to read this article when I had just come back from a long walk along the old railway track near my home, where I had been noticing all the signs that Autumn was definitely settling in, here in Australia. Of note, I was able to go walking in the middle of the day without it being too hot, a luxury I had forgotten during our long, hot and very dry Summer.
beautifully written, and this made me put down my phone and focus solely on your writing, instead of trying to play on my phone while reading articles.
i downloaded this app just this morning, for some reason ever since then, i have been trying to soak up as much as i could and didn’t even realise it until i read this post. Made me realise that i need to slow down and taken my time, there is literally no rush
this post is so beautiful. I recently wrote about my practice of "meaningful dopamine" but i love this idea of slow dopamine - because that's really it - it's moving from the quick fixes. and i love where you're finding these new practices - it gives me ideas to try. thank you!

This! I experience the same thing. But the effort to amend it makes it even more rewarding to complete
This post reminds me about a book that I read few months ago: In praise of Slow by Carl Honoré. Highly recommended

Thank you for reminding me this 🫶🫶
I always find such calm in your posts, will revisit this one whenever I need to find my way back to slow dopamine <3
i absolutely love this!
Chasing slowness and real dopamine ! Spoke to my heart
Any Sorrentino movie is perfect for a slow dopamine moment!
i always make the mistake of trying to rush to the good parts of life rather than just slow down and soak it all in
