“developing social values requires you to do something deeply untrendy: slow down. ask questions you don’t have immediate answers to. listen to people who make you uncomfortable for reasons you can’t quite name. examine your reactions before declaring your positions. and — most radically — accept that your values might not make you likeable. but they might make you whole.” Well said!
"silence is not always betrayal — sometimes it’s survival" 100% agree because being loud about your opinion does not equate to being morally right and in some cases, it ends becoming performative e.g. performative activism.
It's mentally tiring when every political conversation is seen as a debate or challenge to 'prove' how knowledgeable and morally righteous you are.
Beautiful. We are always connected but not truly connecting. I think values are the ones that are felt in the gut and that make you see, listen and appreciate who is by your side. Values allow you to connect, and they are a choice one constantly has to make.
this is something i have been preaching about for over a year now, especially in the climate that we are in now and the profession i have taken up with. you written this in a way no one else could! what a phenominal read!
Yes. I've watched other businesses marking or responding to events and presumed there was a pressure to behave in that way, knowing that it wasn't for me as it felt so by the rote and performative (even when I know it wouldn't have always been).
But this flip side, the backing up of the words with action - this is both scary and more honest. 'Cos sometimes, people don't the courage to do what is right, and it's more honest if they've not previously talked the talk about it.

I love this so much, it really resonated with me. it's beautifully real and honest and right. well done.
Exactly! Moral signaling is not the same as having morals!
